In this intensive and personalized Masterclass, Lace will guide you through how to design an image, choose your materials, choose your color pallet, transfer your image, and paint your image. (All Styles Welcome!) We’ll even discuss sealing, framing, and hanging methods. This is everything you need to know to start taking your painting seriously and create the work you know you’re capable of but haven’t yet achieved.
We’ll talk composition, color, light, style, surface prep, paint application, glazing, brushwork, lines, finishing, framing, hanging, and even applying to shows 🤯🤯🤯 All with your unique style and work in mind.
Each student will design and create their own image, finish it, and prepare it to be hung in the show. We’ll even discuss artist’s statements and pricing.
College painting classes run for 50 to 70 hours and don’t cover half of what we’ll get into!
This class might be for you if:
you paint a little as a hobby and want to drastically improve your skills
Your self taught and want to fill some gaps and feel more confident in your knowledge and ability
You’ve been painting for a little while but feel like you should be better by now
You’re an oil painter who wants to try acrylics.
We’ve crammed a lot into this acrylic painting class to help you seriously level up your painting skills and we can’t wait to see what YOU CAN do with a little bit of our experience.
Before the first day of class: Think about what you might want to learn in this course and about a painting you’d like to create that might help you learn it. For example: if you want to get better at color theory and mixing colors you may want to create an image that uses very specific colors OR an abstract painting with lots of colors. If you want to learn how to paint clouds, think about an image that includes the kind of clouds you want to paint, etc. You don’t need a full plan, we’ll figure it all out together. If you’re only taking a portion of the class you won’t need to create a brand new painting, just bring something your already working on or have already been thinking about.
Session 1, September 12: In the morning we’ll talk composition and style while looking at a bunch of art from a bunch of different artists. We’ll talk about what we like and don’t like and why certain things work or don’t work. We’ll do all of that while keeping in mind the work you actually want to create. (you’ll see questions on the form that will give me direction in building your specific lessons). After lunch we’ll begin Designing and mocking up our composition and I’ll show you several ways I’ve used to create my own images. At this point we’ll also discuss copyrights and fair use practices, and where to find and how to use reference materials. We won’t be using AI and you don’t need special drawing skills! A smart phone/tablet/laptop could be helpful however, it is not necessary.
Session 2, September 19th: we’ll take a look at each other’s designs and have a short but thoughtful discussion about things that work well and maybe things that don’t before spending most of the day doing materials experiments and discussing what qualities make a good artists paint. We’ll also use this time to discuss paint additives, surfaces and substrates, brushes, pallet knives, and the basics of color mixing.
Session 3, September 26th: Image transfer methods and the first basic steps of any painting. We’ll discuss several simple image transfer methods and why you might choose one over another. We’ll also walk through first possible steps to help you choose the methods that work best for you. As the whole class will be painting differing images, we’ll all get to see several methods at work. This entire class will be dedicated to painting. I’ll walk you through the set up then I’ll wander around to answer any questions that come up while you’re working. Throughout this day we’ll end up covering a whole bunch of different application techniques and focusing on the areas you specifically are interested in.
Session 4, October 3rd: We’ll continue working on our paintings and I’ll be here to help offer suggestions and advice. We’ll also probably stop a few times to learn some technique as a class. By the end of this session I hope you’ll have learned some good blending techniques, how to uses glazes and transparent layers, and how to paint a straighter line. If you have any questions we haven’t covered this is the class to ask them in. Before we leave your paintings should be nearly finished.
Session 5, October 10th The painting is finished! Or is it? Bring with to class so we can see where you’re at and answer any remaining questions. The rest of class is all about what to do after that last paint stroke and your signature. We’ll talk about dry time vs curing time and how to choose and apply a varnish. We’ll also talk about the one step in the middle that people often miss and that can make a huge difference on whether your varnish is able to do it’s job or not. We won’t be varnishing your paintings here because they won’t have enough time to fully dry however we’ll send you home with some varnish so that you can do it over the next couple weeks. Finally, we’ll talk about framing and hanging methods.
Bonus Session: October 24th. This session is here just incase any of us need extra time or if we aren’t able to cover everything in the first 5 weeks. I’ll be at the studio regardless so, if you end up needing any last minute guidance, just stop by.
Hanging Day: November 3rd
Show Opens at First Friday on November 6th.
***All of your supplies will be provided. Boxed lunches and snacks will be provided, water, tea, and coffee will also be available.*** Be sure to let us know on the form if you need a special accommodation or consideration such as vegan, gluten free, or any allergies.
