That’s over 35 hours of guided instruction and a group show!
Lace will walk you through how to design an image, choose your materials, choose your color pallet, transfer your image, and paint your image. (All Images & Styles Welcome!) We’ll even discuss framing and hanging methods. This is everything you need to know to start taking your painting seriously and create a successful painting.
We’ll talk color theory, style, surface prep, paint application, finishing, framing, hanging, and even applying to shows 🤯🤯🤯
Each student will design and create their own image, finish it, and prepare it to be hung in the show. We’ll even discuss artist’s statements and pricing!
College painting classes run for 50 to 70 hours and don’t cover half of what we’ll get into!
This class might be for you if:
you paint a little as a hobby and want to improve your skills
Your self taught and want to feel more confident in your knowledge and ability
You’ve been painting for a little while but feel like you should be better by now.
You’re an oil painter who wants to try acrylics.
You’re an acrylic painter who thinks all paints are the same.
You’re curious about what it takes to create a successful painting.
If you’ve never painted before at all, you may want to try a Paint with Me class first though because this will be very overwhelming.
We’ve crammed a lot into this class to help you seriously level up your acrylic painting skills and we can’t wait to see what YOU CAN do with a little bit of our experience.
Session 1: . We’ll discuss composition and briefly discuss some different styles of acrylic painting. After lunch we’ll begin Designing and mocking up our composition and I’ll show you several ways I’ve used to create my own images. At this point we’ll also discuss copyrights and fair use practices, and where to find and how to use reference materials. We won’t be using AI and you don’t need special drawing skills! A smart phone/tablet/laptop would be helpful however, it is not necessary.
Session 2: we’ll take a look at eachothers designs and have a short but thoughtful discussion about things that work well and maybe things that don’t before spending most of the day doing materials experiments and discussing what qualities make a good artists paint. We’ll also use this time to discuss paint aditives, surfaces and substrates, brushes, palet knives, and the basics of color mixing.
Session 3: Image transfer methods. We’ll discuss several simple image transfer methods as well as first possible steps to help you choose the methods that work best for you. As the whole class will be painting differing images, we’ll all get to see several methods at work. This entire class will be dedicated to painting and as we go we’ll stop to talk about some of things we’re seeing and help guide you through methods that will help you have a more successful painting.
Session 4: We’ll continue working on our paintings and I’ll be here to help offer suggestions and advice. We’ll also probably stop a few times to learn some technique as a class. By the end of this session I hope you’ll have learned some good blending techniques, how to uses glazes and transparent layers, and how to pull a decent line (a great line takes lots of practice). If you have any questions we haven’t covered this is the class to ask them in. Before we leave your paintings should be nearly finished.
Session 5: The painting is finished! Or is it? This class is all about what to do after that last paint stroke and your signature. We’ll talk about dry time vs curing time and how to choose and apply a varnish. We’ll also talk about the one step in the middle that people often miss and that can make a huge difference on whether your varnish is able to do it’s job or not. We won’t be varnishing your paintings here because they won’t have enough time to fully dry however we’ll send you home with some varnish so that you can do it over the next couple weeks.
Bonus Session: This session is here just incase any of us need extra time or if we aren’t able to cover everything in the first 5 weeks. If we are all done then we may turn this class into our hanging day.
